This scholarship supports both undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in civil engineering or related fields, with a focus on the innovative use of expanded shale, clay, and slate (ESCS) materials in construction.

About the ESCSI John Ries Scholarship

The ESCSI is the leading international association representing manufacturers of rotary kiln-produced lightweight aggregate (ESCS). Dedicated to promoting the benefits of lightweight aggregate across applications, the ESCSI advocates for its use in concrete masonry, structural lightweight concrete, geotechnical projects, and asphalt applications. The institute collaborates closely with technical bodies such as the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and ASTM to uphold product quality, safety standards, and professional integrity across the industry.

About John P. Ries, PE, FACI

John P. Ries, PE, FACI, is the former Executive Director of the Expanded Shale, Clay, and Slate Institute. Ries served as President of the ESCSI for 27 years and is recognized as an influential figure in the design and construction industry. A dedicated member of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and an honorary member of the ASTM C09 Committee, he has contributed to numerous national concrete-related organizations.

Ries has authored and co-authored over forty publications on the uses of lightweight aggregate. He has been recognized as one of the most influential individuals in the concrete industry for his pioneering work with internal curing.

Scholarship Application Requirements

Eligible applicants include undergraduate or graduate students in civil engineering or related majors who are enrolled in fall 2024 and returning for spring 2025. Completed applications must be postmarked or submitted via email by December 1, 2024. Applications should include:

  • The completed application form (or a Google Form option), signed by the applicant (electronic signatures accepted)
  • A one-page statement describing the student’s interest in ESCS materials, career and academic goals, any planned projects involving ESCS, and the scholarship’s value for achieving these goals
  • Unofficial transcripts indicating a GPA of 2.75 or higher
  • A confidential letter of recommendation from a faculty member (can be emailed directly by the faculty with “John Ries Scholarship” in the subject line)
